A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN
For years I lamented at how the anti-aliasing filter in both my D300 models made all my old manual focus nikkors look inferior to their auto-focus counterparts. It's not that, being so old, they were optically inferior to their modern cousins. But since moire patterns afflict digital cameras, not ones that shoot film, the engineers that made my old lenses never accounted for dealing with this image quality robbing filter when designing their lenses.
Now pairing my old full frame manual focus lenses like this 300mm ED-IF lens I've been shooting with since the late 80's, with my new D810 is a match made in heaven. Full framed just like my old F3 and FA, instead of a cropped sensor, and no anti-aliasing filter. I feel like I did 30 years ago shooting with Fuji 50 or Kodachrome 64 slide film.
Better yet, I can get near that quality with this camera at ISO 3200. Even at ISO 6400 like I did here, the quality is still very good, meaning I could ditch the tripod when necessary. So my shots are actually better now with this lens than back then. So not everything was better back in the good old days...
