Beat it small fry!

While the sponges here in the butterfly habitat are too small to hold a pair birds (even two this sub-sparrow sized), it is roomy enough for one bird and one butterfly, and this butterfly coming in for a quick drink saw it the same way I did.

However the bird sitting on this sponge, that I luckily happened to focus my lens on a split second before this once in a lifetime shot, saw things differently, and told this butterfly to get lost in no uncertain terms.

The butterfly no match for this teeny tiny bully said “no problem” and turned in mid flight to search for a less crowded sponge, or a less bitchy bird.

 • I was pretty sure I was going to visit the butterfly gardens today as how great a place is this to put my two new camera’s through their paces in. After taking lots of shots of the butterflies here I turned my attention to its feathered inhabitants as many were just as spectacular as the butterflies.
One such bird just left or was chased off by this bird arriving a few seconds before this. The sponge is filled with (I'm assuming) some kind of sugar water that approximates the nectar they ingest in the wild.
There are many such sponges scattered around the habitat. They have several large decorative glass dishes filled with the same liquid. The sponges are small and can't hold more than one bird at a time. The dishes large and pretty, can hold several birds and butterflies at a time. It's tranquil and pretty (see picture #393 of this gallery), with everyone getting along swimmingly. The much smaller sponges not so much, as you will see in the next pair of photo's.

 • This sponge isn't big enough for the both of us
 • While the day started out a tad on the chilly for a spring day, by the time I stopped for lunch, it had become quite nice, and I decided to eat outside under the trees at the main restaurant here at the Bronx zoo rather than stay indoors. While I enjoyed my lunch and the warm sun on my skin, I looked up and noticed this common grackle up in the tree in front of me.
