My first time capturing pictures of the nest a few weeks ago, I never managed to get a clear picture of the chicks. Today not only did a get lots of clear shots , I even captured several shots of the parents feeding them.

  • The Bronx Zoo is built on 265 acres of woodlands. And the zoo didn't turn all of it into cages and natural looking habitats. There are several places to walk where natural ponds and streams have been left alone and are populated by creatures both captured and wild.

  • The Tiger habitat at the Bronx Zoo is a great spot to get photographs from. Encased in glass there's plenty of viewing spots to stand, if it isn't too crowded, which on this late weekday afternoon, it wasn't.
  • Two weeks ago I came across a blue heron's nest and got a lot of nice shots of the parents and chicks. This time I came back on another free day off with the express purpose of capturing that nest. But that wasn't going to stop me from taking out my camera to capture some images along the way. Here as I entered the park after getting off the bus, I ran into a group of geese as they decided in mass to get up out of the water and spend some time on terraferma.
  • The key to capturing siren scenes like this here at Clove Lakes is to have a good feel for how closely you can weave yourself and your camera into the fabric of the environment without destroying it. One misstep and everything takes flight.

  • As I've been photographing nature here at Clove Lake over the years I've noticed certain spots that particular animals love to spend time at over and over again. This night heron and this waterfall are a constant pairing. The branches over this spot are probably a good location for it to hunt from. Though for all the number of times I photographed him, I've never actually seen it do any hunting. <br />

But as they are a nocturnal species, maybe he does all his hunting at night. And this is the spot he comes to to get some sleep - with his eyes open.
  • Two weeks ago I came across this heron's nest, that regulars to the park tell me has been here for four seasons now. Today I came back with the express purpose to get more shots of the nest, and the babies therein.
