• While patiently waiting by waters edge here at Clove Lakes, for the right lighting to hopefully present itself at a scene of some purple wild flowers I was capturing bumblebees feeding from, I glanced to my right and out of the blue this immature male green heron quickly lit upon a floating branch and started searching for food.
Unlike other parts of this lake, the water right in this vicinity is pretty shallow, making it a perfect hunting ground for little guys like this to do their hunting in. His bigger cousins, the great blue herons and egrets prefer the deeper parts of the lake where they can hunt for bigger prizes than this little guy will likely find swimming in the shallows here.

 • He's spotted something.....
 • If a great blue heron could even spot a tiny fish like this it wouldn't waste the energy to bend its head in it's direction. But to this young green heron, it represents a nutritious snack, albeit a tiny one. You have to have exceptional reflexes and aim to grab something that small and wriggly out of the water. Impressive indeed.

 • A group of passers by told me that a snapper was sunning itself down the shore a bit from me, as I continued to capture shots of the baby green heron. But when I got a chance I left the spot I was camped out in to check him out.
Another young guy today. Large for a turtle in these parts, but small and a tad under developed for a snapper compared to what I've seen and photographed at this lake before. It was still surprising to see one sunning as that is one species of turtle here at Clove lake that doesn't make a habit of coming up out of the water for any length of time normally, and thus this was indeed a highly rare sight.

If you were one of that group of friendly passers by who pointed him out to me this shot is for you.
