all creatures great and small
It was quite a day for catching fish here at Clove lakes. The torrential rains from the day before really stirred things up for the many avian hunters who live here. I captured more shots of birds capturing fishes today than I have in all my other trips here over the last 30 years.
Most of the shots were in the rocky brook that connects this large lake with Clove lake a tad over ¼ of a mile north. The massive rains from yesterday washed loads of luckless fishes over the falls and into the brook where heron’s and egrets had an absolute field day picking off the stranded fish.
But this heron came to his customary spot, in the deeper waters with no place to trap a fish, and a fish could slip by his legs and into the deep end of the lake. Turns out that’s easier said than done as he grabbed his prize quite deftly.
Interestingly enough this is not the first shot of him with his afternoon meal. That’s the shot 4 photo’s before this one. Instead he caught the fish here, carried it over to the muddy shore off in the distance. Stabbed at it a few times. Then brought it back here to eat. Hey whatever works.
