There would be no end to the number of great shots I could get of these incredibly inquisitive fellows, however every inch of their glass display is forever covered with dirt, making very shot look out of focus and low contrast, too bad.

  • All the fascinating creatures moving about in the trees are absolutely wonderful but the gi-normous tank / habitat at the Bronx zoo's Wild Asia exhibit is my favorite part of the experience. The mini theatre at the end that sits below the waterline is sooooo cool!! As you sit on the benches you watch all the giant fish swim towards you. It's a real sight to behold.

  • definitely one of my favorite avian shots that I've captured at any zoo...

  • Sun bitterns have the most spectacular colored plumage on the underside of their wings. Few birds I've seen make you gasp as they land on a branch wings spread then them. I tried many times to get a shot of that over the years at the Bronx zoo, back when I was living with mom in her apartment in the Bronx. But never came close to succeeding. Then here today on my first trip to the World of Birds in over 20 years I got an unexpected glance at that spectacular "under plumage." Still not the kind of shot I'm hoping for but it's a start.

  • I just can't say this enough, for a tiny little dot of a place, the Staten Island Zoo holds a surprising number of interesting animals and displays, like this pair of Ring-tailed lemurs. While I observed them this happy pair seemed positively joined at the hip. And I had no idea they were this big. I thought lemurs were all large house cat sized. These guys must have been 2ft tall.

  • Last week I captured some shots of these mud skippers, but because of dirty glass and not using my tripod they did not come out well. Coming back to the zoo again today to try again and capture shots of a baby Sunbittern being fed by its' parents, I made sure to stop by this tank again first, and get a good shot if ever there was a good one to get.
  • After my extreme frustration with my 18-50mm Sigma DC macro zoom's performance, I'm happy to say this 17-70mm Sigma is an outstanding general purpose lens. Sharp and versatile, here its' macro mode at all focal lengths gave me the perfect field of view for this close up shot. Much of the glass was too dirty to shoot through, which meant when I found a spot that was clean and gave me a nicely composed shot I needed a lens that could focus that close and give me a field of view that was not too tight and not too wide - great lens.
