• By 6:00 or 7:00 am Wednesday morning we had almost arrived at our
destination. My plan originally was to have a large group of us show up about 45 minutes before this to get a group shot from our marvelously situated balcony as we steamed towards our dock in Bermuda.

There was one downside to our fabulous suite - the wind. If it was breezy, the wind was a force to by reckoned with, and on top of that this morning it was raining too.

When I opened up our front door (designed like the ones you find on a submarine, and after dealing with the wind I could understand why) to lead us all out onto the balcony the wind and rain nearly knocked us all right off our feet, and blew half the ceiling tiles out. In two seconds our room looked like a hurricane hit it, which wasn't far from the truth. Slamming the door shut on that scene ended my grand plans for that shot, and all the girls soon left to go back and get some rest or breakfast.

But as our ship slowed to a crawl as we approached the island the rain and wind all but stopped and I invited our friends George and Curtis to come out onto our balcony and enjoy the view as we prepared to dock. So it turned out I was going to get the opportunity to photograph somebody enjoying the view after all.

 • George was having a ball teasing Curtis and I about our NY sports teams...
 • Land ho!
 • Well George turned out to be right, as we did follow the Explorer of the Seas path right into harbor, and the fun and teasing continued right into port.

 • It was Saturday afternoon having left Bermuda about 24 hours before, we were well on our way back to New York. I wasn't going to start packing till after diner tonight, for our early morning arrival in New York Sunday. So I still had a few hours to relax and enjoy myself without thinking about our cruises final moments and me searching for someone to lug all my heavy bags to the curb, for my long ride back from Manhattan to Staten Island.

Looking for something to do I noticed the ship was celebrating the end of the cruise by having a show featuring the children of the passengers on the cruise. These children spent a bit of their fun time on this cruise learning how to balance spinning plates on the end of a stick, like you see at the circus and birthday parties. They had gotten quite good and now it was time to show their family members who all packed the auditorium, just how much.

When I peeked inside the door and saw how good they were and cute they looked, I sprinted back to my suite and tossed a few lenses into my small camera bag and raced back to capture some of the show.

 • Looking at this little girl I was impressed with her ability to balance that plate on the end of that stick in that bizarre position. I was also happy that I managed to capture her whole routine on film.

As I was standing all the way in the back of the auditorium by the door, I had only one lens that could fill the frame with these pint sized performers from that great a distance, and had a maximum aperture wide enough to use indoors. My old 135mm f2.8.

But that lens is well over 20 years old, and so predates auto focus and anti shake stabilization. So I was going to have to focus all the shots myself, and hold my camera absolutely still through the whole routine. But somehow, just like the little girl, I pulled it off.
 • Another highlight of the show, passing the spinning plate down the length of the long line person to person. Hey face it these kids were really good.
