Drone on

Yesterday I came out in the pouring rain to capture life in the Big Apple on a day that was sopping wet. My fault for not making sure all my lenses were protected from the deluge.

However all of them came out unscathed, that is except for my new Tamron 18-400mm, which was in use as much or more than all my nikkor's during the heaviest rain yesterday. And as such I guess it was not surprising that the front element fogged up within minutes of me pulling it out of my camera bag each time, as it had a lot of moisture it had to expel (So much it turned out that I had to give it some special TLC once I got home to dry and clean it out).

The lens had finally fogged up so badly that I needed to give, I guessed from the amount of condensation, at least 30 to 45 minutes to clear up. Frustrating as this delay in my shooting was, it didn't bother me totally because the batteries on one of my remote triggers had died, and I failed to pack a spare set before I left the house. So I needed to take a trip to the 7- Eleven just across from the park to get more. The trip there and back to the jewel weed bush where I was capturing photo's of hummingbirds would easily take me a half an hour, so I might as well take a break and let the lens de fog itself.

On my trip back I pulled out my Tamron to see how much closer the front element was to clearing itself up, and determined I needed at least another 15 minutes, so I slowed my pace a tad seeing I was in no rush , even though I had other lenses in my bag, all of which showed no ill effects from yesterday's rain, the one lens by far and away, the most ideal that I had brought with me for capturing those hummingbirds was my foggy 18-400, so why hurry back.

As I looked around me on my now leisurely stroll, down the main road I spotted a man with a remote in his hand. Looking to see what the remote was controlling, I looked up and saw it was a drone. I wanted to get a shot of it and him in the same photo, and I stopped at the bench across from his position and pulled out my 60mm lens.

As the drone started to descend back towards mother earth I spotted a father and son also admiring the drone, just as I was. Great an added bonus for my shot.

  • I came out to Clove Lakes specifically on a day forecast to be rainy almost all day long because life doesn't just happen on days that are warm and sunny, with lots of white puffy clouds. Humans and animals are active when it's pouring down rain as well, and I want to capture some of it on film for posterity.

  • Turns out the gentleman flying the drone (Michael) is not a regular visitor to Clove lake. In fact he doesn't even live on Staten Island (Brooklyn I believe he told me). We had quite a nice long conversation. He was trying out his drone, doing all sorts of things to get it's flight pattern parameters just the way he need for them to be, which required quite a few maneuvers. He wanted a big open space to do it in, and Clove Lakes was the place he decided to come to to try.<br />

He told me he could set the drone to fly several pre-planned patterns ( figure 8 's and the like) or follow him around taking pictures, or any other number of really cool tricks. Awesome toy! Quite a pleasant diversion for me, as our two different hobbies had us crossing paths on this beautiful summer day.

  • For most of we home owners, a truckload of fresh snow probably means lots of back breaking work. But for my next door neighbor Ava, at '7425 Backyard lane' it just means lots of fun.
