A rock and a hard place

Any one who's frequented the promenade that over looks Wollman's rink in Central park during the summer, has stopped to look down over the all the family rides that fill the rink when there's no skating there.

They might have stopped at the refreshment stand that serves those big foot long hot dogs and hamburgers, and sat down to enjoy the sights and sounds while they ate their snack. And that's what I was doing this fall afternoon.

While I stood in line waiting for my hot dog, I looked out in front of me and something in the distance caught my eye, people sitting on the rocks that sit up above the grounds. Since I couldn't recall seeing anybody up there before it caused me to stop for a moment and investigate. I found the relaxed pair quite interesting, and as it was going to take a little while to grill my foot long, I dug into my camera bag and pulled out my telephoto zoom so I could snap a few shots of these photogenic friends.

 • After downing my foot long dogs and capturing the photo of the two girls sitting high upon the rocks over my head, I walked further into the heart of the park and decided to make a left turn and head toward the Mall, Central Parks famous gathering hole for all types of humanity down through the years.
Right at the very entrance to it this wonderful fall afternoon was a folk band filling the air with music. What made the trio such a compelling subject to capture was the location they were performing at. They chose to station themselves in front of the Olmstead flower bed which leads into the Mall.
Marvelous as the background was however, it was actually a tad too busy. I needed to soften it up a bit to let the group stand out. And so I decided to pull out my trusty old 85mm nikkor. 20 years old at least while it doesn't have auto focus, it does have a maximum aperture of F2. which I put here to very good use.
