News outlets said the fire started about 6pm. By the time Amy and I got to this spot on the corner of Benziger and Jersey street it was 6:20 or so, and the fire dept. was already on the scene in force, and while the grey smoke billowed high, the last of the flames massive enough to be spotted from our vantage point, were already being put out by the fire dept. By the time I got back here again with my photo gear, I could see no more flames, though they were still there, but of course police were keeping those who didn't live on the block entrance to get close enough to be able to see them.
Right now the smoke was concentrated on the homes that were on fire on the right side of the block, while you could clearly see all the homes on the left side with little difficulty, that would soon change as the thick hazy smoke was just about to start spreading.
