  • Taking the week off mostly so I could take pictures, this particular day I decided was going to be another "candid's only" day for me, and chose to spend it first in Washington Sq. park, then after I felt I'd gotten enough shots there I'd spend the rest of the day roaming around in Central Park. But as I was riding the subway up from Washington Sq. I remembered how many people friendly places the city created on Broadway, and decided to get off early, and walk my way up the great wide way until I reached the park on 59th street, and see what I might come across.<br />

Well right in front of the World's biggest and most famous store, they were having a public chess match. The champ (in the black cap and white tee shirt) took on all challengers. "Take on the champ for $5", the sign read "and win a prize". Good luck winning that prize, he's champ for a reason.

  • I'm bad enough at chess when you give me all day to make a move. Put a time clock on me like what these two have to play with, and I'd REALLY stink! Here even as our plucky challenger was rushing to hit his button on the tournament clock, the champ was already looking to strike.
  • This match must have been a really good one because scarcely a soul tried to leave the whole time I was there.

  • I was more intent on capturing the flavor of the contestants moods as the match swung back and forth, and failed to keep track of who was winning. But I could easily tell as I was looking through my viewfinder here that our challenger knew he just made a huge mistake - whatever that was.

  • I'm lousy at chess, but I think that that queen hiding behind our challenger's right leg means he will be checkmated in two. But everyone enjoyed a fine match, including our two contestants - and me!
