I took many shots of this scene before the wind turned the heavy snow against me and my lens. This image was cropped a tad tighter to eliminate some of the scene along the bottom that is visible in the next shot. Waiting for a nice spacing of people to walk across the bridge was key, though unfortunately not the best way to keep warm.

  • I took many shots of this scene before the wind turned the heavy snow against me and my lens. This image was cropped a tad tighter to eliminate some of the scene along the bottom that is visible in the next shot. Waiting for a nice spacing of people to walk across the bridge was key, though unfortunately not the best way to keep warm.
  • The first blizzard of last February was kicking up with a vengeance when I found this scene. With the snow covering my glasses no small amount of the time, I had some difficulty finding my footing, as I very gingerly edged my way down the embankment to shores edge. The snow covered branches I wanted to include on the far right of this picture, was blocking the tree on the far right of the Bow bridge behind it, and that tree was equally important to me. So I risked plunking my entire left leg into the lake to get far enough over to include both. With the snow covering the water nearest the shore, looking just like the snow covering the ground, and snow on my glasses, accidentally slipping my leg into the lake was a distinct possibility. But this scene absolutely looked worth the risk - as much as I could tell given the conditions. When I went through my shots at home I was so glad I did.<br /> <br /> I was hoping for someone to walk over the bridge that was wearing a pop of color, or holding a colorful umbrella to add to this wonderful almost monotone scene, but after waiting for almost 60 minutes the wind direction turned against me and my face, and just when someone like that showed up, the wind covered my lens with buckets of snow. So these shots were the best I could capture. Still I was very happy with them none the less.

  • On this chilly February day my decision to stuff my camera into what little space I could find in my backpack led to this early morning shot, as I headed into the city.
  • Coming home from work on the ferry each afternoon, I have often looked at this scene and wanted to capture it when the time of year and the ferry's schedule were in sync with sundown. To get the quality of image I want from a moving boat at that time of day however, will require the use of a much more expensive camera than I currently posses. But for now getting in some practice on this shot from time to time with the camera I do own, is good mental exorcise.
  • I was walking through snowy Central Park during the 2nd of the two February blizzards this year, searching for a potential location that would be ideal for some future shots I want to capture, when I came upon this scene of children at play in this winter wonderland. People of all types stopped to take pictures of them, professional and amateur alike, using everything from top of the line camera's to cellphones. The scene was so charming, I decided to take a break from my scouting quest to join them in the picture taking fun. Days like this keep you young.

  • I liked the mix of light fog and the sunrise on this scene as I was riding the ferry into the city on this March morning.

  • When it comes to the seagull in this shot you'll probably either like it,or hate it. As far as my thought process went at the time, I was on a moving vessel so the composition was changing by the second, and the ship's size and angle was right how I wanted it to look for this scene, with a fast moving weather front flying in creating an almost instant foggy background that looked fabulous. So it was take the shot or not time, with the seagull or no shot at all - I took it.<br /> <br /> A few years later now with the ability to clone out objects in Photoshop that were nearly impossible to do with Capture Nx, I had the opportunity to remove the seagull and recompose, but again I decided that the seagull deserves to live on.
  • I've lived on Staten Island for over 20 years now and as I used to ride into Manhattan each day, the smoggy haze that at times used to hang over the New York skyline, would ruin a lot of potentially good shots. But thankfully such days are now long gone. On this particular morning as I stood at the front of the ferry on my ride to the city, there was a foggy haze blanketing the city scape, a quality of atmosphere that enhances as opposed to the old smog that detracted from a scene. That combined with the warm sunrise (and no small amount of editing on my computer) combined to turn this view of Manhatten into a kind of pastel like art work. (For those of you not familiar with the NYC skyline, the building just a tad left of dead center with the pointy top is the Empire State building).
