After taking pictures of my best friend Scott painting his prize winning model at the Games Workshop in the Village I headed back home, but just missed catching the next ferry. Since there was a bag full of camera equipment hanging off of my right shoulder and it was a beautiful evening complete with a picturesque waning crescent moon, I thought I might as well spend the next 30 minutes before the 7 o'clock ferry arrived, putting that equipment to good use.

  • With another perfect weather night predicted, and the days of idyllic warm nights coming to an end soon from falls inevitable chilly appearance, I headed out to Jersey City in the hopes of getting that magic 'sunset couples shot' I have been seeking all year, before the arrival of autumn's nights made anyone walking down the rivers edge bundle up in layers of clothing from head to toe. But again my elusive prize failed to materialize. Still that didn't mean the trip was a total waste, and if nothing else it was surely a wonderful way to spend an evening.

  • The pretty crescent moon helped pull me out onto the balcony at the ferry terminal, and after taking several shots of it with my Telephoto zoom, I decided to walk into the park to see if there were some other spots the moon might look nice in.
  • Soon my early morning trips to the city on the ferry will be brutally cold affairs. While mornings trips outdoors on the ferry are still tolerable and even sometimes quite pleasant, I'm taking the opportunity to bring my camera along for the ride and record some early morning scenes of the mammoth bay protected from the oceans fury, that made this "megatropolis" possible.

  • Another fantastic fall evening. Another time the weather tempted me to bring my camera along. Another evening the Hudson river persuaded me to walk down our marina at Battery Park City. Another evening my camera filled up with beautiful sunset images...
  • With other things to do than take pictures today, bringing along my tripod was just something I was loath to do, though I dearly missed it here after the sun went down. But I rang out every last drop of light the early evening had before the lack of a tripod made shooting a fruitless endeavor. The last moments of available light that fell upon the marina on this beautiful evening, wound up providing me with one of my nicest opportunities.
  • Coming into the city today I decided to slip my camera into my backpack, and was rewarded with a full moon and this colorful dawn sky.

  • The weather conditions these last few days made for some picturesque scenes coming into dock at South Ferry. This one perhaps more so.

  • Having come to this spot numerous times over the last 18 months I've been enamored with this wonderful location from day one. Trying every conceivable angle, and numerous fields of view, I was never happy with what I saw through my viewfinder. So I tried different seasons, spring summer and fall, different times of day from dawn to dusk, and considered low tide to high. Finally I decided what I really needed to do was to wait for weather conditions that would reduce the scene to it's most basic elements, few things do that better than fog. The final element that had to go was the distracting colors, but that was something only my software and not mother nature could do for me.
  • Just 15 minutes before taking this shot I was up the embankment about 50 yards away, on the esplanade, under a beautiful canopy of yellow and orange taking pictures of those pretty fall colors as people passed by underneath them. But as I continued to take pictures I noticed a quick and considerable change in the lighting conditions. Looking to my left I could see that a fog bank was descending down over the Hudson. In just a few minutes my entire view of the water and Jersey shore was completely blanketed in fog.<br /> <br /> In the picture just before this one, fog turned out to be the key missing element to that shot for which I had been trying to capture since last summer. For some time now after trying different times of day, and almost every time of season, I had concluded that less light would be the final piece to greatly improve the scene, and so I tried coming back during dusk, and cloudy conditions but still I wasn't satisfied. Now as I somewhat absentmindedly admired the wonderful mood setting weather pattern as it settled in, my brain slapped me in the face, shocked that it took so long for me to realize the missing ingredient to the scene was fog, and if I didn't hurry I was going to miss it. I sprung up grabbed my gear, then raced down the path to the vantage point I'd come to so many times before, and squeezed off several shots.<br /> <br /> Finally satisfied with what I saw through my viewfinder of that scene, (for the first time in 18 months) I then walked over here to this spot to capture a few more photos before the fog lifted (and it did just a few minutes after this). I kept peering into the fog hoping for a really nice looking ship to sail by to complete the scene. Now this ferryboat really wasn't what I had in mind, but you know what they say about beggars.
