  • After coming out to the park and testing out location spots and camera settings earlier in the month, I came back on their next fireworks night at the Yankees minor league ballpark here in Staten Island, to add some fireworks images to my collection.
  • The fireworks started each night right after the game ended. But not having a radio tuned to the game and with the scoreboard angled away from where I needed to stand to record my shots, I had no way of knowing when the game was about to end. So I would get there about 9pm or so and wait, and wait for the fireworks to start. Fortunately there where plenty of seats near me, and the weather was beautiful each night, plus the view of the bay and the city skyline certainly were a pleasant diversion for me until the post game festivities started up.

  • Out to Jersey City again in my quest to get that perfect 'couples' shot at sunset. Still not quite good enough, but I'm getting closer. Maybe on my next trip over I'll hit that bulls eye.
  • Having already tried out my new Sigma lenses abilities at macro shots, and gave it a passing grade, I brought it out to Jersey City on this beautiful evening to see how it preforms at shots from medium distances out (the failing that doomed it's predecessor and made me trade it in for this one - in 20 years I've never had to trade in a Nikon lens for poor performance). Happily this 17-70mm zoom's performance at distance shots, has been equally as pleasing to me as it's macro shots. Hallelujah, I FINALLY have my all purpose 'Streetshot' lens.
  • A wonderful friend of mine has an Uncle who owns a professional photo gallery filled with images that he captured with his camera then converts them to paintings in Photoshop. She sent me a link to his website. The images are marvelous. When this older photo of mine, just edited for the first time a few days ago, looked very underwhelming, despite the use of my new high end software, her uncle's images inspired me to try something different for a change.

  • After work, I rushed to get to the marina here in Battery Park City before sundown, but I could tell I wasn't going to make it in time. So I decided to look around where I was for a nice vantage spot for a sunset photo - I found one.

  • The last time I came here on a stunningly clear evening, I arrived minutes too late to capture some nice photo's of yachts back lit by a fabulous sunset skyline. So this time when the prediction was for an equally gorgeous night I made sure to get here early enough to record it. And while it turned out that this sunset was a touch less beautiful than the one that first night (only a touch), the weather was even better.<br />

One of the most perfect evenings of the entire year, the light warm breeze off the river combined with the idyllic scenery and gently encouraged me to stroll up and down the Marina and soak in the whole experience. Every now and then I would wake up my camera, a silent companion resting quietly by my side, and ask it to record a nice looking scene coming into view...

  • Warm beautiful nights like this make one truly glad to be alive.
  • As the light faded from the sky, getting a good exposure and a high enough shutter speed to freeze any movement got a lot tougher. However the colors, pale by comparison a few minutes earlier, benefited immensely from it. In those last few moments of twilight my fingers danced with my camera's controls, using my familiarity with it to balance image quality and light sensitivity. Inevitably the lack of light caused my shutter speed to fall off a cliff, and my light sensor to finally give up the ghost...but not before I recorded this one last scene.
