  • It was autumn 2011 and for the 4th year in a row the fall colors were far less than spectacular. Just my luck I had gotten back into photography in 2007 and that fall the colors, as along time Staten Islander commented to me that year, were the most brilliant he had seen around these parts in many many a year. Unfortunately I only had my newly purchased little point and shoot camera's to capture the scenes with, and while they were great for capturing travel scenes from my cruise the Caribbean, when I set them to capture finely detailed scenes here back home their shortcomings became readily apparent, as they failed to record the fine varied details and colors of a truly spectacular fall season. That prompted me to use much of my tax refund from 2008 to buy my first DSLR. Unfortunately none of the falls since were very good, and 2011 was well on the way to becoming year number four of drab fall colors. Then late in the season we got a spat of cold fall evenings - the thing most responsible for bright fall colors, and I noticed a significant improvement in the fall colors around my neighborhood, and so I decided to take an impromptu trip out to Clove Lake to see if cool nights had the same affect on the leaves out there. Boy did it ever....

  • I found myself on the wrong side of this pond to capture the shot I envisioned. Plus there were other shots on the side of the pond I was still at that I wanted to capture, that would take me away from that other side of the basin to which I looked at with a photographers curiosity. But my gut told me if I traveled over to the other side of the pond with the sun still at a point in the sky that would accentuate the reflections off the water if the cloud cover didn't get any heavier, I would be probably be rewarded with a really great shot. This is why I trust my gut so much.

  • The Old Mill at the Bronx Botanical Gardens is a key historical feature of the grounds. It's also a good photographic subject come fall time.
