  • As quaint as they look during the day, the Jersey City light rail staions look even better at twilight.
  • Sometimes there are watering holes that attract both man and beast. But I bet if you've never been to New York City you wouldn't think you'd find one of them in the middle of Manhatten.

  • Living on the other end of Staten Island for over 20 years, I always wanted to come to this spot by the Bayonne bridge at sunset but I never got around to it. Finally on my last day of summer vacation for 2010, I decided the time had come.
  • Even with a soccer game going on behind me to my left, and children playing behind to my right, it was still just as tranquil a moment at this quaint little park along the Kill Van Kull strait as it appears in this shot.

  • Whether country or city Old World or New, find a body of water with some fish in it, and you'll have the opportunity to photograph a scene seemingly as old as time itself.
  • One of my good friends at work had been planning to get a bunch of his friends together to play softball in Van Cortlandt Park on the 4th of July, and they wanted me to come out and take pictures of them (no easy trip from Staten Island I can assure you.) I showed up in sandals and shorts to spend a relaxing few hours shooting, and promptly got put in the game to play on one side due to shortness of players. Well that cut out half of my photographing time (plus have you ever tried to run the bases in sandals?)<br /> <br /> Before everyone showed up I did grab some nice shots of a few of the early arriver's getting in some batting practice. This shot in particular of my friend Arkis being pitched to by his brother, is actually the kind of shot that will probably hold historic value 50 years from now, if a historian runs across it looking for images of New York the way it use to be in the old days during simpler times. Yes whatever day "today" is, will always appear to be simpler and more relaxed to people in the future, sad though that may be...
  • This year on the 4th of July I wanted to finally record some fireworks. Believe it or not, that's one subject I've failed to record. I went out to Battery Park last year but my choice of location and attempted use of a monopod instead of a tripod ruined all my shot attempts that night. I planned to makeup for both those errors this year. But I had a hurdle to climb over first, because I left my tripod home to start the day, as my presence and photographic skills were requested by friends to take pictures of them playing softball all the way up in the Bronx in Van Cortlandt Park. I left my tripod home because it would have been too cumbersome to carry around in the park, and of no use to capture spontaneous shots of the guys at play, anyway.<br /> <br /> So after spending the afternoon shooting in the park I left the Bronx to go home and pick up my tripod. Unfortunately I didn't plan for the coast guard to shut down the ferry service after the 7 o'clock boat and not starting it up again until after the fireworks. I vainly raced home and tried to get back in time to catch that last boat back into the city, but missed it by about 20 minutes. I as stood there looking into the inky black night at the island's shore, it looked like it would be another 12 long months before I could capture some fireworks.<br /> <br /> Fortunately the Yankees minor league team rescued me by having a fireworks night every Thursday in July here in St. George. So lucky me, I only had to wait 4 days.
