Crayfish with an attitude
I came to Clove Lakes early this morning looking for nature shots. I crossed the driveway the workers use park their cars, because this route would lead me past a large clump of jewel weed bushes behind the ice skating rink, which given the weather conditions this morning, would be covered with dew.
As I did I happened to look down and spotted a large red insect, bigger than any bug I’d recalled seeing here before. I had to get a better look at him. Bending low to get a better look I could see the reason he was so big, he was a crayfish. No doubt he was crossing the driveway to head to the lake about 10 yards off in the distance.
Now as soon as I stopped to look at him, he stopped likewise. Perceiving me as a threat to make a meal out of him he, wisely guessing I could easily out run him, tried to defend himself instead the best he could. Getting up on his hanches he attempted to make himself look as big and scary as possible, which was so cute.
Now I had to get down on my knees so I could get as low as possible for my photo opp. As I did I could see a cars headlights coming from behind me to my left. As it happened the lights from the car illuminated the crayfish quite nicely, making for a really nice shot (You can see it in my nature gallery shot #1258).
After the car passed by me and parked inside, Anthony, the driver of the car, came back out to start his day. Passing by me, and curious of what I was kneeling to photograph we started to chat. The crayfish was still there standing claws up, and he found the little guy as humorous as I did, and after he took a few shots of him with his cell, I offered to get a shot of him together with the crayfish and send it to him to mark the event. So the little guy made a nice start to both our mornings.
