  • I arrived after work at the street fair on Van Duzer street, here in my home of Staten Island just a little while before it ended, but I still tried to capture a few shots anyway. I absolutely detest getting in peoples way while I'm trying to photograph, and found precious few good vantage points of the band that didn't block somebodies view of the stage. My hatred of that plus my love of high key and edgy lighting led me to discover this perfect spot to stand.

  • It's a common ritual to see people wave to each other from one ship to another as they cross paths on the choppy seas. But this exuberant fellow took it one step higher this early Saturday morning.
  • ...and of course everything that goes up, must come back down.

  • Through the annals of time, ships and the sailors that man them have inspired many a book, ballad, and poem. Even classic movies have been dedicated to them. But I'm sure if we sweep the halls of record a thousand times over we'll never find one ode, psalm, or tome, dedicated to the captain of the "Porta Potty" boat. But if some day one of these gifted artists is ever spared from acute intestinal distress by a fortuitously placed porta-potty, they should reconsider dedicating one song or poem to this man.

  • My very first shooting opportunity with my new D300s. I didn't even plan to take any pictures with it yet, as I was still setting up all the various preferences and menus just the way I had them in my old D300. I only tossed in 2 lenses in my bag because the unsettled weather which was predicted for this evening meant I might get some interesting lighting conditions on the ferry ride home. In the mean time I walked by this scene while I was working and it immediately caught my eye. I liked the potential composition and came back on my lunch break with my new camera and wide angle zoom to get this shot. If only I had brought along my widest angle zoom lens and polarizing filter, I could have gotten the shot I really envisioned. But this shot of Jones New York's grand re-opening at Herald Square, was not too bad.
  • Today was my first real day getting to test out my new D300s. Of the many tweaks Nikon made to this updated model the only one I traded my old D300 in for was the improved response time to the "live view" mode. Well it turns out I under estimated several other improvements they made to my beloved D300, as I have already found several things easier and faster to accomplish with this new model. Here though the improved response time of the live view mode was the thing I was testing (and the quality of my new Sigma 17-70mm lens). Delightfully there is no lag time looking through my 3 inch view screen like in my old model, which made using live view on moving subjects near impossible. Now the exact moment in time I want to freeze forever, I can.

  • Hanging out on the back of the boat I spotted a clump of geese flying low in the sky with the city skyline behind them. Interesting as it was the clump of birds didn't stand out enough in a definitive way, from the buildings to make an appealing shot. But as the ferry and fowl moved along on their own courses, the composition changed for the better.

  • I pass by this particular flower shop many, many times in my travels to and from the Island, and I have always liked it photogenic wise, but I knew a shot like this is incomplete. But eventually some happenstance or lighting condition will bring me that missing quality this shop needs. A shop keeper at just the right spot would do wonders.
