Scene's from the Flower Show
Last week I had bank business that I needed to take care of and remembered about it after the bank closed Friday. So off today, the first day of the flower show at Macy's, I had to make a trip into the city to take care of it. As I knew I'd have a little free time afterwards I decided to pack up some of my camera gear and kill two birds with one stone.
In all the years that I've been back in New York after graduating from school in New England as an 18 year old, I've never taken the time to photograph the Macy's flower show. Many many times various friends have said "You must, you must".
Also although I've been out twice already to test my two new camera's, I haven't spent much time trying my old full frame manual focus lenses much on my new D810, save for my 300mm nikkor.
So I decided to take care of both situations in one swoop. Slipping a bunch of my old manual nikkors in my bag I stopped off at Macy's after getting out from the bank, and spent an hour or so testing out some more of my faithful old lenses. The lens that got the most opportunities was the one that basically got none on my D300, my 20mm f2.8.
While I had found good use for quite a few of my old manual focus lenses on my cropped sensor Nikon's, especially my 300mm which I left home today, my 20mm stayed home each time gathering dust, because there was no scenario where putting a 20mm lens on a cropped sensor camera made any sense whatsoever.
Finally on a full frame camera for the first time in over 20 years, and one without an anti-aliasing filter to boot, it was finally getting it's chance to shine. Giving me wide fields of view in indoor settings without the image distorting curvatures that you'd get with a wider angle lens , like an 18mm, or worse a fish eye. Just straight lines that remain straight, and lots of wide views to go with it.
Here in this shot it combined with my D810's ability to give excellent results at high ISO's, to capture this image without the need for a tripod or other means of support. Oh how great it is to have this lens back in it's rightful place in my camera bag again.
